The Full Story

About

My name is Stephen Blase but most people know me as Blase- a DJ, Producer and designer based in Auckland, New Zealand.

I am a multifaceted human that likes to express through various art forms and facilitation. Ultimately, my why is to help encourage self expression of the Soul through cultivating embodied experiences and custom made clothing.

I started out as an Ecstatic Dance DJ in 2020, offering nation wide dance experiences where people are free to move and express in a fun, judgement free environment. My involvement in the Ecstatic dance movement caught the attention of the festival scene near after and I have since become a staple in the New Zealand Festival community offering dance at festivals such as Splore, Earthbeat, NZ Spirit, Resolution NYE festival and Dimension festival to name a few. Ecstatic dance is my movement meditation and helps me to drop deep into my body and has helped me to approach life from a deeper level of awareness and curiosity. Offering this work is my Dharma and is how I contribute to raising the vibration of the collective, ultimately for the benefit of this Earth we all inhabit... who needs us now more than ever. I believe our disconnection from the Earth stems from our lack of connection to our bodies in todays western society and strongly believe Dance is one of the ways we can relearn how to be in harmony.

I also LOVE Bass music and noticed on my journey a gap in the number of embodied DJs in the night music scene. I started to offer late night conscious rave sets where dancers on my dance-floor are encouraged to lose themselves in the music whilst simultaneously scratching the itch of the underground bass music scene in NZ. I enjoy the fact that I get to express my dark side through heavy drops and full power dance waves as well as the lighter, day time Ecstatic Dance energy.

I now teach others how to cultivate conscious dance spaces and create intentional music journeys through DJ'ing. I have teamed up with the incredible Sarsha Hope to co- facilitate the Somatic Dance teacher trainings internationally several times a year in NZ, Portugal and Bali. This training changed my life. I discovered a new way to interact with reality and with my body. It taught me how to resource, which means to work with my emotions and nervous system in such a way that I can better handle the stresses of everyday life in this modern society, but also gave me the tools to look inward and face the aspects of myself that needed to shift and change as a result of decades of conditioning and generational, collective and experienced trauma. I teach soundscape curation and the energetics of holding a trauma informed dance space on this training and feel honoured and privileged that I get to witness others discover the same tools as I did whilst stepping into their power and most authentic expression! To see a person transform into a more confident, inspired and sparkly version of themselves in such a small period of time is such a gift, and the fact that this is what I get to do for a living is even more amazing. In between these trainings I offer one on one DJ mentoring and help my clients to drop into the energy of the embodied space holder. I teach music theory, DJ fundamentals but also work closely with my clients in the realms of energetics, working with limiting beliefs, spacial awareness and how to work with the nervous system of a collective.

Lastly, you may be wondering where the fashion and clothing piece comes in? Throughout my 20's I worked in fashion. I ran a boutique clothing manufacturing business in Auckland which was one of the last places in NZ that could offer a full service from an idea to manufacturing to the store racks. Here is where I learned pattern making, cutting, sewing and how to operate machinery for what we called 'attachments' - a fancy way of saying buttonholes, buttons, tacks and things like that. I also worked in the Bespoke suit tailoring industry for a number of years and once I sold the small manufacturing business I worked for 18 months in the costume department for The Lord of the Rings TV series. Here I was the head cutter and assisted with various other tasks... my claim to fame is that I cut and worked on the iconic costume for the 'Stranger' who was the main wizard character in the show. My wealth of experience in the clothing industry ultimately showed me the dark side of fashion. The unfortunate reality of the industry is a horribly wasteful and fast fashion trend driven monster that promotes cheap labour and the exploitation of immigrants. Sad I know. That is why it is SO important that you vote with your dollar when you make purchasing decisions and where you buy your clothing. The silver lining of this story, is that fashion is a fun way to express your personality and something that can be done in an ethical and sustainable way. That is why I have taken all the skills that I learnt throughout my decade in fashion and work one on one with customers to create bespoke (custom made) statement pieces. One of a kind, minimal wastage and made to order. The only way I feel I can participate in the industry whilst making the smallest footprint in doing so. I also get random sparks of creativity and make one off pieces for my online store- Check it out.
